What does the R-value of a sleeping pad mean?
The R-value measures how well a mat insulates against cold from below—the higher, the warmer. Values around 2 are sufficient for summer, from about 4 it becomes usable for spring and autumn, above 5 is designed for cold. The ground extracts more heat at night than the air.
Self-inflating or inflatable — what's the difference?
Self-inflating mats have a foam core that fills with air by itself when the valve is opened; a final blow will provide the last firmness. Pure air mattresses need a pump, but are lighter and have a smaller packing size. The foam core insulates by itself, a pure air chamber does not.
Screw-on cartridge or pierceable cartridge?
The two systems are not compatible, and this is the most common wrong purchase for camping cooking. Screw-on cartridges have a thread and can be removed as long as there is still gas inside. Pierceable cartridges are pierced once and remain on the device until emptied. The cartridge type is specified for each cooker.
How do I clean camping dishes without a sink?
Zuerst auswischen, dann mit wenig heißem Wasser nachspülen — und das Spülwasser abseits von Gewässern versickern lassen. Angebranntes löst sich, wenn Du Wasser im Topf kurz aufkochst. Seife nur sparsam und biologisch abbaubar; in vielen Schutzgebieten ist Spülen in Bächen und Seen ohnehin untersagt.
